Order of Service inspired by A More Profound Alleluia

We read the introduction and first chapter from John D. Witvliet’s book A More Profound Alleluia. In which, he discusses the structure and practices of worship to be Trinitarian in nature. He walks through how each aspect of the service can be an example and lesson on God’s Trinitarian essence. We were challenged by our professor to make a hypothetical church service using Witvliet’s structure and Trinitarian ideas.

Call to Worship:

  • Scripture that points to God’s invitation to come to the Table, as well as establishment of the focus for the service.

  • Here the heart of Jesus found in John 17: “I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.” ‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Confession:

  • Something like a congregational prayer or litany to pray

  • Father, have mercy on us

For the ways we have lost sight of your heart. For the moments we looked to other gods to satisfy. For the times we chose to hide in the arms of fear and anxiety rather than under your wings. Bring us back to the arms of the Father.

Jesus, have mercy on us

When we forget to love like you taught us to love. When we ignore the example you lived for us and choose our own way. For the times we doubt and belittle your power. We believe, but help us in our unbelief.

Holy Spirit, have mercy on us

When we ask for counsel and help from lesser helpers. For the times we act like you are not dwelling within us. For the dishonoring ways we go about our days forgetting that it is by your Spirit that we are made one with God, and know his heart. When we dishonor our temple for the Holy Spirit.

4 Songs/hymns:

  • Rest on Us (Upperroom)

  • Psalm 23 (People & Songs)

  • Make Us One (Antioch Music)

  • King of Kings (Hillsong)

Benediction:

  • Using a benediction that acknowledges the different persons of God as a blessing to the congregation. Can be taken form Church history or Scripture.

  • “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.”

‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭23‬-‭24‬ ‭ESV‬‬
